Highway Exit Numbers Begin Changing This Weekend in Massachusetts
We’ve heard for a bit that the state would be changing exit numbers on highways across Massachusetts, now the first phase is starting this weekend.
MassDOT announced that Route 140 between Taunton and New Bedford will be the first highway in the state to get the new milepost-based exit numbers, and that the change would happen starting this coming Sunday, October 18th.
The change is to bring highways in Massachusetts inline with Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) requirements, which now has exit numbers based on the mile marker the exit is closest to.
Old exit numbers will remain on the signs along with the new exit numbers, according to state transportation officials, for a minimum of two years.
Once work is complete on Route 140, the state plans to move to Interstate 195 between Seekonk and Wareham in southeastern Massachusetts, as the next phase of the project.
No word on when other highways will be up for the changeover yet, but MassDOT is aiming to have the conversion done on all highway exits by the end of Summer 2021.
