CNN Names $1.5 Billion South Station Tower Among World’s Top Architecture Projects for 2025
Boston’s South Station makeover has landed on CNN’s radar as one of 11 major building projects to watch in 2025. Construction kicked off in 2020 on this $1.5 billion project, which remains on track to wrap up by mid-2025.
“It just shows our dedication to the built environment and that we stick with projects that we believe in and we don’t give up and we’re persistent,” said Sean Sacks, Senior Managing Director of Hines, to CBS News.
Towering above the historic Classical Revival station, an impressive 51-story building will bring 680,000 square feet of office space and 166 new residences. The tower blends the old with the new in a striking architectural design.
The uppermost 16 floors will feature Ritz-Carlton homes. These span from cozy one-bedroom units to luxurious two-story penthouses that top off the building.
“It’s the perfect environment for (an architect) to work (in), you have a front row seat to watch society evolve around your project,” said Fred Clarke, Pelli Clarke partner, to Boston Magazine.
The tower features three community spaces at different heights – a restaurant on the ninth floor, a private club on floor 36, and a sprawling one-acre sky park on level 11.
The transit hub below is getting its own upgrades. Teams will make the bus terminal bigger, update the train station, and add a five-story parking garage.
The tower combines smart design with green building practices. Modern climate control systems match up with tough environmental standards, aiming for LEED Gold, WELL, and BREEAM Excellent ratings.
This milestone comes after twenty years of planning. Pelli Clarke & Partners, an American architecture firm, designed flowing curves that complement the station’s historic features while growing its main hall.
