Zdeno Chára is one of the toughest and most accomplished players in the history of the NHL. Standing at an incredible 6’9”, Chára is a giant on the ice. He has made a name for himself as a fierce defenseman and team captain. We could talk all day about his list of accolades. Some of the notable ones include the Norris Trophy for the league’s top defenseman, the Mark Messier Leadership Award, and the Stanley Cup. (No big deal).

However, in addition to his achievements in the rink, Chára has also shown a remarkable dedication to fitness and endurance. In April 2019, he made headlines when he announced that he would be running the Boston Marathon, one of the most prestigious and challenging marathons in the world.

Zdeno Chára And The Boston Marathon

The Boston Marathon is a grueling 26.2-mile race that takes place annually on Patriots’ Day. The course starts in Hopkinton and ends in downtown Boston on Boylston Street. To complete this race requires months of training, dedication, and mental toughness. And this year it wasn’t the greatest running conditions. It was chilly and rainy the entire day.

Chára, who had been an avid runner for many years, took on the challenge with enthusiasm and determination. He trained rigorously throughout the NHL season. He also worked closely with a team of trainers and nutritionists to develop a customized training plan that would prepare him for the demands of the marathon.

Running For A Cause

On race day, Chára joined thousands of other runners at the starting line. He was decked out in his Team Hoyt gear and wearing a smile on his face. Throughout the race, he pushed himself to the limit. But the crowds cheered him on! Despite experiencing some pain and fatigue, Chára refused to give up. He eventually crossed the finish line in an impressive time of 3 hours and 57 minutes.

Chára’s Boston Marathon journey was a powerful reminder that, no matter what challenges we face, we all have the capacity to push ourselves beyond our limits and achieve great things. His example inspired the hockey world and beyond to take up new fitness challenges and pursue their own goals.
