2023 Boston University Hockey, 6 Local Players And Stanley Cup Champion Coach
The Terriers 2023-2024 season is officially off to a fast start, with four games down already. In fact, you can catch many of their games on major networks this season, such as ESPN+ and NESN. While you are tuning in, you may notice that this year’s Boston University hockey roster features many players from Massachusetts.
Of the 28 players listed on the current roster, six of the Terriers this season are from Massachusetts. Here is a list of the local players to look out for.
- Tristan Amonte, is a junior forward from Norwell
- Mick Frechette, is a freshman defenseman from Weston
- Shane Lachance, is a freshman forward from Andover
- Doug Grimes, is a freshman forward from Brookline
- Jack Hughes, is a junior forward from Westwood
- Nick Howard, is a grad student goalie from Burlington
You will notice from the list above that half of the local players are freshmen. The rest of the lineup this season included a collection of great talent from all over the globe. International players include; Aiden and Macklin Celebrini from Vancouver, Mathieu Caron from Abbotsford B.C., Tom Willander from Sweden, and Ryan Greene is from Newfoundland.
Coach Jay Pandolfo
As for head coach Pandolfo, he has deep New England ties. He was the captain of the Boston University Terriers during the 1995-1996 season. Prior to that, Pandolfo grew up in Burlington. His post-college career included playing in the NHL for the New Jersey Devils, New York Islanders, and Boston Bruins. With the Devils, Pandolfo won two Stanley Cup titles (2000 and 2003). He was then on the Bruins coaching staff before joining his alma mater. “One of the all-time greats in the storied history of Boston University men’s ice hockey will lead the Terriers into season No. 101 and beyond as Jay Pandolfo was named the program’s 13th head coach on May 5, 2022,” Boston University states.

As for what lies ahead for the Terriers, battles at North Dakota and Quinnipiac (2023 champion) in November jump out. In late January, Boston University will face their cross-city rivals at Boston College for a home-and-home. These local Massachusetts players on the Boston University hockey team will play in the annual Beanpot starting on February 5th.
