Kelly Clarkson’s New Songs Blast Ex Brandon Blackstock
Kelly Clarkson attends NBC's "American Song Contest" grand final live premiere and red carpet at Universal Studios Hollywood on May 09, 2022 in Universal City, California.
Kelly Clarkson is making the most of being “Miss Independent” with her new songs. One day before the Friday (April 14) release of her two new songs, “Me” and “Mine,” from her 10th studio album Chemistry, the singer shared the lyrics with fans on social media. Both songs appear to be about her getting over her split from Brandon Blackstock.
On “Me,” Kelly sings about losing her identity during a particularly difficult relationship. “Too much I’ve had to live for, put my life on hold for,” the lyrics read. “I’m always pleasin’ someone, but honestly, now I’m done.” The chorus of “Me” seemingly references Kelly’s 2015 single “Piece by Piece.” That song was about her then-husband, where she sings that he “filled the holes” left by her own parents’ divorce. “I don’t need somebody to hold me, don’t need somebody to love me. Don’t need somebody to pick these pieces up,” the 40-year-old sings on her latest track.
In “Mine,” Clarkson starts the song by questioning Blackstock’s “every motive, everything” he says. “Thought with you, maybe my heart wasn’t meant to break,” she sings. “Can’t believe I let you in, can’t believe I stayed.” Even though the lyrics are sad, she doesn’t seem bitter. She wishes that one day someone will take “your heart and hold it tight.”
As we previously reported, Clarkson said Chemistry “is definitely the arc of an entire relationship, and a whole relationship shouldn’t be just brought down to one thing. So there’s the good, the bad, the ugly thing kinda going on in it.” She added that the album can be “a really amazing sexy, cool, fun thing, but it can also be very bad for you,” she said in the video announcement. “I thought it was kinda the perfect title to describe the entire album.” While she didn’t disclose an exact release date, the “Breakaway” singer said the album is “coming out soon,” with singles from the record dropping “even sooner.”
Clarkson and Blackstock were married for almost seven years when the talk show host filed for divorce in 2020. Their marriage was legally dissolved two years later, with the former couple agreeing to share legal custody of their daughter River Rose, 8, and son Remington Alexander, 6.
