Police Find Strange Anomaly Underground In Lawrence
The Massachusetts State Police spotted an anomaly underneath a street in Lawrence on Friday.
The finding came one day after widespread explosions destroyed several homes — Claiming one life, and injuring several others.
While flying above a street in Lawrence, a police helicopter spotted an anomaly at the intersection of Broadway and Andover Street.
At the time, Trooper Eric Fairchild was using an infrared camera to monitor the situation on the ground.
Lawrence firefighters were informed about the discovery, and after investigating the location, determined the anomaly was related to a major gas leak underneath the pavement.
Their findings likely prevented another catastrophic event from unfolding.
Meanwhile, Governor Charlie Baker declared a state of emergency yesterday and appointed Eversource to oversee operations.
According to the Boston Globe, the mayor of Lawrence, Daniel Rivera, said Columbia Gas failed to adequately respond to the situation.
As you may recall, the natural gas company did not release a statement until nearly five hours after massive explosions rocked Lawrence, Andover, and North Andover. As the hours passed after their initial statement, frustration grew due to lack of answers, and failure to set forth a plan of action.
As of today, more than 8,000 homes and businesses in the area remain unoccupied and without power or gas.
With new management in place, the Governor is hopeful people will be able to return to their homes by the end of the weekend.
As for restoring natural gas to local homes and businesses, that process could take weeks.
