Darius Rucker: His Divorce ‘Therapy’ Song
Darius Rucker said in a recent interview with Apple that after his divorce from his wife Beth in 2020, there has been no bad blood between them. The couple share adult kids.
Darius told Kelleigh Bannen on Apple, “I always say, (my ex-wife) is a saint. She’s an amazing human being, and she’s a great mom, and we get through life.”
Rucker also said that his “50-something self” is much more forgiving than his “mid-20-something self.” He acknowledged that you must be forgiving because “life goes on.” He said, “Your kids are still your kids, and you have a life, and you try to make the best of it.”
Darius also said that he has learned many lessons from his divorce and that it has opened his eyes to how many resources are available to couples who have split. He said he realized there’s “help out there for people.” He noted that being raised the way he was, getting help “in the Black community especially, that’s frowned upon.” Rucker added that he learned that many people out there’ll talk to you, and that’ll “help you a lot.”

He said that music has always been his “therapy.” One song on his new Carolyn’s Boy album, “Never Been Over,” refers to his divorce, and it was so personal he almost didn’t put it on the project. He said, “You write a song like that, and you sing it over and over, and you cry sometimes when you sing it.” Darius added that it is “just one of those songs,” and he loves it. He said that song for him, and when he was done with it, he was like, “‘Man, that was therapy right there.'”
The song’s lyrics include, “We’ve never been a headlights weaving / Taillights fading / So long, move on / Goodbye waitin’ / Never been one last long look across your shoulder / We’ve been a lot of things / But we’ve never been over.”
