Carrie Underwood Brought This Country Legend To Tears
When Carrie Underwood paid tribute to Vince Gill during his CMT Giants special, she sang Vince’s song “Go Rest High On That Mountain, ” which he wrote in the 1990s. The performance brought the Country Music Hall of Famer to tears as he wiped away tears, put his hand on his chin, and gave a standing ovation to Carrie when she completed the touching performance and took a bow.
The song Vince released in 1994 as part of his album When Love Finds You has been a song that, over the years, Gill has sung at many a funeral in Nashville of a country star. This journalist has personally seen him perform the song at the funerals of George Jones and Charlie Daniels, just to name a few.
The song sings, “Go rest high on that mountain / Son your work on earth is done / Go to heaven a-shoutin’ / Love for the Father and the Son.”
Carrie said of Gill, “He’s an Okie boy, and I’m from Oklahoma. I feel like getting to grow up and see him and other artists like him that were from a little bit down the road go on to live the dream that I wanted to someday maybe have was just super inspiring. He’s got obviously an incredible voice and just some of the most memorable songs in this era of country music. It’s just an honor to get to be here.”
She added, “I feel like a lot of people kind of just trying to make this night, you know, special and kind of have.”
American Songwriter quoted Vince from 2014 about writing such an emotional song. He said, “I wrote it right after my brother died. I wasn’t going to record it; I didn’t want to. But [producer] Tony Brown talked me into it … When people are hurting the most, in the worst place they can be, they’re reaching out to that. To that song. And that means way more to me than where it landed on the charts.”
Gill currently tours as a solo artist with his wife Amy Grant for their annual Christmas tour. He is also touring as part of The Eagles. He told Southern Living of being an Eagle, “I can’t even describe how much I’ve loved getting to tour with the Eagles for the last six years, and to to be on stage and facilitate in some way, some small way, those songs, getting to live on. And, it hasn’t been lost on me.”
