Single In Massachusetts? Data Says You’re not Alone
Women in New England get married much later than women in other parts of the country. Why is this? Where does MA land on the list of all 50 states?
According to data, people in Massachusetts and New England are getting married much later in life compared to the rest of the country.
Does that surprise anyone though? I grew up in Massachusetts. It seemed like none of my friends who stayed in MA ever got married under the age of 30. On the other hand, when I lived in Tennessee for almost ten years it seemed like all of the women were getting married in their early 20’s! It was such a cultural difference. So, is there a reason for this?
What The Data Says
Overflow Data sourced data from the 2022 American Community Survey. They tracked marriages within one year for those aged 15 to 54. And they determined that the age of women getting married really varied based on the state where they lived. States in the North seemed to have women who got married mater in life. Women in the Southern states got married significantly earlier.
Where Do The New England States Rank?
It’s not surprising, but data says that the age of New England women getting married happen much later in life compared to the rest of the country. Rhode Island is #3 on the list of all 50 states, and they also lead the New England region. The average age of a woman to get married in RI is 30.5 years old.
Right behind Rhode Island at #4 overall is Massachusetts. Massachusetts women on average get married at the age of 30.4. Another another New England state in the top 5 is Connecticut. The average age for women in CT is 30.1 years old.
The rest of the New England states are pretty high too. Vermont’s average age is 29.4, Maine is 28.9 and New Hampshire is 28.1.
Why Are Women Getting Married SO Much Later In New England?
There are a new theories, but these are the most popular ones. In a nutshell, the increase in the number of women’s places in both education and work environment have led to a delay in marriage. Women are putting their careers first and not putting as much emphasis on getting married, or starting a family until they are financially stable enough to do so.
