Lip Service
With looks appearing in Harper’s Bazaar, Instyle, Vogue, W. Glamour, Rolling Stone, Time, People, and countless other pubs, it’s no wonder Time Out NY named Lori Hamlin Penske “one of the best make up artists for hire.” After all, her artistry has graced the faces of Bridget Moynahan, Connie Britton, Megan Boone, and other famous faces on red carpets across the world. So, when it came time to feature all things lip care and color for the season, we were more than psyched for the chance to pick Lori’s brain.
What trends are you seeing for lips for fall/winter?
Hot trends for fall include stained, smudged and tinted lips in any deep matte shade or the complete opposite, nude, barely there color. I am also seeing a lip line that is smudged with loose powder to create a look that is undone or worn.
What are some of your favorite products for both lip care and color?
Lip serums are the latest trendy beauty booster. Because lips show age as quickly as your eyes, it is important to treat the skin around the lips as well as the lip itself. Serums absorb quickly to nix dry skin, eliminate fine lines and loss of tissue density. My new favorite is Inika Organic Lip Serum.
Everybody should have a good lip balm. Inika Certified Organic Lip Balm is packed with nontoxic ingredients that will hydrate, smooth and keep color on the lips longer. It is so safe, I even let my 9 year-old daughter borrow it.
At the moment, my favorite nude lip shades include Hourglass Girl Lip Stylo in Dreamer & Peacemaker and any shade of their Femme Nude Lip Stylo. I am also a fan of the Certified Organic Lip Tint by Inika in the shades Candy and Rose.
For a “Kool Aid” or “cherry” stained lip, I love YSL’s Volupte Tint-In-Balm in Touch me Red, Tease me Pink and the nude shade Call Me Rose. For a glossier stain try any of YSL’s Glossy Stains.
My favorite matte products include Inika Certified Organic Vegan Lipstick in Nude Pink and Pink Poppy, all shades of MatteTrance by Pat Mcgrath and Hourglass Confession Ultra Slim High Intensity Refillable Lipstick.
Can you share any application tips?
For any of the fall lip trends to look their best, it is important to treat the lips first with a serum or balm so that the color will go on smooth and evenly. Chapped lips would be a real beauty buster!
Exfoliate the lips using a toothbrush or washcloth then treat with a lip serum or balm as recommended above.
To achieve a trendy fall lip, pucker your lips then press on any deep fall shade with your middle finger. I like the way this softens any lip look. Using your fingers allows the product to smudge perfectly to create an effortless look. This was also a hot look on the runway.
For a traditional nude look, dust the lips with powder around the lip line before applying lipstick. I like Inika’s Mattifying Setting Powder and Laura Mercier Loose Powder in Universal. This will keep lip color from bleeding into fine lines and will help it wear longer. Apply lip color with a brush starting at the center & blend out towards the corners. Lightly trace arches with lip pencil. Inika Organic’s Certified Organic Vegan Lip Pencils have a nice glide and are soft enough that I use the shades Dusty Rose, Safari and Nude Delight alone as the lip color. Finish with a light dusting of powder again.
