Catch Of The Week: Alex Anthony
Meet: Alex Anthony, a singer/songwriter from Newburyport
We can’t help ourselves from making comparisons, it’s human nature. It’s how we reference. With singer, it’s especially hard not to. Even singers with as unique a sound as Alex Anthony. Alex has his own mold but, yes, there were those who came before him who certainly were an influence. Folky, Americana, blues- infused, singer-songwriters like Ray LaMontagne and Jack Johnson. So there’s your comparison. Gritty, raspy, achy vocals emit from this perceptive songwriter.
When you listen to Alex sing, it’s as if the lights are low. There is heartache and hopefulness, worn out vinyl records playing, and whiskey being poured. Damn, that sounds like a country song. I wouldn’t categorize Alex as a country singer, and neither would he. But really, what does a country singer sound like? Country music has always drawn from many influences. Some current artists have a more traditional style that many would perceive as “sounding country,” like Jon Pardi, Chris Young, Midland or Miranda Lambert. But since it’s inception, country has embodied many influences, from Appalachian and Celtic folk to blues. I believe it’s the storytelling that makes country, country. So, in that aspect, Alex can absolutely be called a country singer.

- Crazy thing that happened in your career: Meeting people I don’t know, and them knowing/requesting my original songs

- Frivolous fun facts: Self traveled to U.A.E., Italy, Prague, and many other countries. Never have lived in the same place for more than 3 years. Comic Book Nerd
