Human Interest Stories

Warning: this story, and the song and video, can be upsetting due to references to the Route 91 Harvest Festival shooting.

At midnight Thursday, rapper Eminem released a music video for “Darkness,” which uses elements of the 1964 Simon & Garfunkel song “The Sound Of Silence.” Both the song and the video seem influenced by the 2017 Route 91 Harvest festival shooting in Las Vegas, where a gunman opened fire from his hotel room and killed 58 people before killing himself.

The song starts with the narrator describing his loneliness but soon escalates to his murderous shooting spree.

The highly charged and potentially upsetting video ends with news footage of numerous mass shootings in America, and then the graphic on the screen asks, “When will this end? When enough people care.
