Maren Morris May Not Attend CMA Awards Amid Aldean Dispute
Maren Morris tells the Los Angeles Times that because of the rift between herself and Jason Aldean and his wife Brittany, she may not attend the CMAs. If you missed the drama, here’s a recap: Brittany Aldean recently posted to Instagram, thanking her parents for not “changing her gender” because she went through a “tomboy phase.” Jason responded to the post, “Lmao!! I’m glad they didn’t too, cause you and I wouldn’t have worked out.” Ironically, her post used Beyonce’s “Upgrade U.” Beyonce is a supporter of the LGBT community.
You’d think celebs with beauty brands would see the positives in including LGBTQ+ people in their messaging. But instead here we are, hearing someone compare their “tomboy phase” to someone wanting to transition. Real nice.
Morris then tweeted back at Pope, saying, “It’s so easy to, like, not be a scumbag human? Sell your clip-ins and zip it, Insurrection Barbie.”
In the Los Angeles Times interview, Maren said, “Honestly, I haven’t decided if I’m gonna go [to the CMAs]. I’m very honored that my record is nominated. But I don’t know if I feel [at] home there right now. So many people I love will be in that room, and maybe I’ll make a game-time decision and go. But as of right now, I don’t feel comfortable going.”
Brittany then appeared on Tucker Carlson’s Fox News show. Carlson called Morris a “lunatic” and a “country music person who I hope leaves country music immediately.” Morris told the Los Angeles Times, “I’ll wear that like a badge of honor.” Morris has sold T-shirts reading “Lunatic Country Music Person,” and she said proceeds from the t-shirt have raised more than $150,000 for Trans Lifeline and GLAAD’s Transgender Media Program. Before that, Brittany made Barbie-inspired T-shirts of her own that read “Don’t Tread On Our Kids.”
“I don’t think I lost any fans over this,” she said in the interview. “I’ve been very clear from the get-go. It sucks when artists stay quiet, stay quiet, stay quiet, and then they finally reach their breaking point and have to say something because something is so unjust or disgusting. And then they lose half their crowd because they stayed quiet. I try to tell my husband this because he’s still building: Let people know where you stand.”
She added, “The ones who don’t get it will fall away, but the ones that stick with you will know what they’re contributing to.”
The 56th Annual CMA Awards will air live from Nashville on CBS on ABC TV at 8 PM ET. Morris’s Hunmble Quest is nominated for Album of the Year.
